CNN —An epic festival in Las Vegas featuring a lineup that included Alica Keys, Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson and Gwen Stefani was canceled on the eve of its opening due to high winds. According to the “Lovers & Friends” festival’s official website, “organizers have been monitoring the weather for several days and proactively preparing for a windy Saturday. However, the National Weather Service has now issued a High Wind Warning, including dangerous 30-35 mph sustained winds with gusts potentially more than 60 mph.”“Following advice from the National Weather Service and in consultation with local public officials, we must make the safest decision for our fans, artists, and staff, and cancel tomorrow’s Lovers & Friends Festival,” the statement posted on Friday continued. “This was an incredibly heartbreaking decision to make as we are aware that fans have traveled from all over the world to enjoy this incredible lineup of superstars and have been looking forward to this event for several months,” the statement added. The one-day fest, which was to have taken place at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds, started in 2022.

Bob Graham, a Florida Democrat who as a little-known state senator cleaned stables and waited on tables in a clever populist strategy that helped to boost him into the governorship, the United States Senate and a run for the presidency, has died. His daughter Gwen Graham posted a family statement on social media Tuesday evening announcing his death. Mr. Graham was disabled by a stroke in May 2020. The son of a Florida state senator, Mr. Graham gained little political traction after 13 years in the State Legislature. He performed what he called “Workdays” off and on for the rest of his career.

(AP) — Relatives of Tyre Nichols, George Floyd and Eric Garner — three Black men killed in violent confrontations with police officers — expressed frustration Friday with politicians who have failed to pass police reform legislation or have worked to invalidate laws intended to reduce chances that citizens' encounters with police end in death. Philonise Floyd, the brother of George Floyd, told an audience at a police violence symposium in Memphis that the time has come for Congress to pass a federal law that would ban certain police tactics such as chokeholds and no-knock warrants. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, proposed after Floyd died in Minneapolis in May 2020 after a white police officer pressed his knee to his neck for more than nine minutes, was passed by the House in 2021, but the Senate failed to reach a consensus. “You need to know your politicians ... because these are people that are not applying pressure to help,” Floyd said. The Detroit Casino Council (DCC) called the first strike in its history after negotiations which began in the summer did not yield a new contract. On Sept. 29, 99% of voting workers from all unionized groups at the three Detroit casinos voted to authorize the DCC to call a strike if negotiations weren't progressing. The committee estimates the strike would risk $3.4 million in operator revenue per day, with the greatest impact to MGM Grand Detroit at $1.7 million per day. "We've made six proposals to the union and our current offer includes the single largest pay increase in the history of MGM Grand Detroit," the company said. Industry gaming revenues have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with the Detroit casino industry generating $2.27 billion in 2022, according to the DCC negotiating committee.
